Preventive

School Awareness Programs

Awareness from a young age on healthy lifestyles can go a long way in enabling prevention of major non-communicable diseases. Covering a wide number of schools in West Bengal, till date DAY has been able to impart the importance and need of healthy lifestyle amongst over7500 students. Each such program consists of a 2 – 3 hour session that includes a fun presentation, interactive session along with a pre and post-session questionnaire that helps to understand the current awareness status among students. The session is more than often accompanied by a general checkup of health status.

Screening camps

Over more than a decade now, DAY has been advocating the importance and usefulness of population screening in early identification of NCDs, especially Diabetes. We are proud to have conducted such camps in different setups including Corporate, villages, religious places, residential societies, clubs, and colleges to name a few. The camp activities include assessment of weight, height and hence BMI, waist circumference, random blood sugar level, blood pressure, ECG (optional) and an individualized lifestyle consultation by diabetes educators or nutritionists with special focus on diet. More often than not, with the help of a corporate tie up we also check some more blood parameters such as HbA1c and the liver function test.

Mobile Diabetes Centre

DAY ensures its advocacy of population screening and awareness build-up on healthy lifestyle to remote areas far beyond the city borders through its Mobile Diabetes Centre. The vehicle is fitted with the necessary modern instruments and is manned by a professional team of doctors, nutritionists and diabetes educators to ensure that we reach out to specially those who have limited access to healthcare systems and providers.

Diabetes Aware village (Our village program)

“Ignorance is bliss” was a realization among DAY members when in 2010we met the villagers from Kumarpukur in South 24 Parganas who had not even heard the term Diabetes! Making an instant decision to adopt this village, today it has been successfully converted into a model diabetes aware village where the entire population is screened (approximately 2500) from time to time. The initiative consists of a monthly visit of the DAY team consisting of a Doctor, pharmacist and a Diabetes Educator to serve at the outdoor clinic. Free medicines are also dispensed to the needy as necessary including those identified with Diabetes.
